This apple pear walnut crisp is so easy to make and will definitely satisfy your dessert craving! Fall and winter are my favorite seasons for making all kinds of sweet treats. For me, fall means apples, pumpkin, and any variation on those themes. Although pears aren’t in season here in North America, I still find pretty tasty fruits shipped from around the globe at my local grocery store, and I take full advantage of that with this recipe. The tart apples and the sweet pears work perfectly with the walnuts in this recipe, creating a fall dessert that everyone always asks for.

Why You’ll Love This Apple and Pear Crisp

  • Easy: This is a simple recipe that only takes a few minutes of prep. Then, you just bake!
  • Simple Ingredients: It only takes some apples, pears, and a few kitchen staples to make this recipe.
  • Delicious Flavors: The apples, pears, walnuts, and warm fall spices create an absolutely delicious flavor profile.

Ingredients

  • Granny Smith Apples: Granny Smith apples are firm and tart, pairing perfectly with the sweetness of the pears.
  • Bartlett Pears: Bartlett pairs are naturally sweet and complement the tartness of the apples.
  • Spices: Nutmeg and cinnamon give the crisp a delicious fall flavor.
  • Butter: Butter adds richness to the fruit mixture and helps bind the crumble topping ingredients.

See the recipe card at the end of the post for a full list of ingredients and their exact measurements.

Flavor Variations

  • Apples: I prefer the tartness and firmness of Granny Smith for this recipe, but you can use any of your favorite apple varieties in this recipe.
  • Nuts: Walnuts, pecans, almonds, or almost any of your favorite nuts will work well in this recipe.
  • Oats: Add some oats to the crumble topping for more texture.

How to Make Apple Pear Walnut Crisp

1: Whisk the flour and brown sugar in a large mixing bowl. Then, add 1 cup of butter and mix on low speed until crumbly.

2: Whisk the sugar, salt, nutmeg, and cinnamon in a medium bowl and set aside.

3: Add the peeled, cored, and sliced apples and pears, along with the walnuts, to a large bowl. Then, add the sugar mixture and mix until everything is coated well.

4: Pour the fruit mixture into a 9×13 baking dish and randomly add slices of the remaining ¼ cup of butter on top.

5: Spread the flour mixture evenly over the fruit mixture and bake at 400 degrees for 45 to 55 minutes.

Hint

For this recipe, you want the butter to be cold, not softened.

Storage

Refrigerate this apple pear walnut crisp for up to 4 days in an airtight container. For longer storage, freeze it for up to 2 months in an airtight, freezer-safe container.

To reheat, defrost the crisp if frozen. Then, microwave individual portions at 30-second intervals until heated through.

What to Serve with This Apple Pear Crisp Recipe

Serve this crisp warm with a scoop of ice cream or a dollop of whipped cream and a glass of milk or a cup of coffee or tea. This classic fall treat also makes the perfect dessert after a hearty, cold-weather meal like pot roast, beef stew, or casseroles.

Tips

  • Slice your apples and pears to roughly the same thickness for even baking.
  • Save some time and buy chopped walnuts instead of chopping your own.
  • Spoon your flour loosely into your measuring cup and level it with the flat of a knife to avoid using too much.
  • Mix the sugar, cinnamon, and fruit first so they can macerate a bit as you make the rest of the crisp.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do you choose ripe apples?

Look for apples that are firm to the touch, heavy, and free of blemishes and bruising. The apples should have their full characteristic color with minimal green remaining, depending on the variety, as well.

How do you choose ripe pears?

Ripe pears should yield to gentle pressure at the neck when ripe. They should also have an aromatic smell. If the pears are hard and have no smell, they’re unripe.

What’s the difference between a fruit crisp and fruit crumble?

There’s very little difference. In fact, they’re so similar that the names are often used interchangeably. A crisp topping is made with flour, brown sugar, oats, and butter, while a crumble is made in the same way but without oats.

Hi Terri, this crisp looks delicious, it’s quite a different version of the Apple crisp I make — a traditional Sunday dessert with a scoop of ice-cream made with oats, brown sugar, and butter but I am quite tempted to try your version with pears, walnuts and flour. Yumm! Have a wonderful Sunday!
