Here’s a super quick and easy delicious recipe that’s perfect for the upcoming holidays. Sausage kielbasa green beans are an easy side dish recipe to add to the holiday menu. Perfect for Thanksgiving or Christmas dinner, this green bean recipe with kielbasa is super simple to make.

Sausage Kielbasa Green Beans

Not all holiday recipes feature orange, cranberries, or sage – although all of those flavors are delicious. Simple dishes like this one or my bacon green beans are also great additions to your festive menu.

I love to serve this smoky, meaty dish as a holiday side, but it can also be a main course. Just pair it with some cheesy mashed potatoes and garlic bread with roasted garlic. Yum!

Key Ingredients

You’ll find the most important ingredients for this recipe listed here, but the full list and amounts are in the recipe card at the bottom of the post.

  • Kielbasa: Kielbasa is meaty and smoky, pairing perfectly with the green beans.
  • Green Beans: Canned green beans are tender and soak up the flavor of the sausage.
  • Red Onion: Chopped red onion adds an aromatic flavor with a blend of sweetness and bite.

Variations

  • Fresh Green Beans: If you make this when beans are in season, increase the cooking time and use fresh beans.
  • Onions: Use yellow or sweet onions for a dish with more sweetness and less bite.
  • Add Veggies: Try adding mushrooms for more flavor. You can also make sausage potatoes and green beans.
  • Add Bacon: Add bacon and potatoes to make this green beans and potatoes with sausage and bacon dish.
  • Spicy: Add red pepper flakes for a little heat.

How to Make Sausage Kielbasa Green Beans

I have a brief overview of the recipe for you right here, but you can find the full instructions in the recipe card at the end of the post.

  1. Cook the kielbasa and onions in a large Dutch oven until the sausage is brown and the onions are fragrant.
  2. Add the remaining ingredients, cover, and cook until heated through. Enjoy!

Expert Tips

  • Slice your sausage into ¼ to ½-inch-thick slices for quick and easy cooking.
  • A Dutch oven works best for this recipe. If you don’t have one, use the heaviest pot you have.
  • Reserving some of the green bean juice is key to infusing the recipe with more flavor.

Sausage Kielbasa Green Beans FAQs

How do you know when kielbasa sausage is done?

Because the vast majority of kielbasa is precooked, you really only need to worry about getting color on it. However, any kielbasa from a deli sold as “fresh” or “raw” should be cooked to an internal temperature of 160°F. This is easy to do when cooking sliced kielbasa, as the sausage is generally fully cooked by the time it’s browned on the outside. If cooking whole, fresh kielbasa, use a meat thermometer to ensure doneness.

How do I avoid mushy sausage kielbasa green beans?

This sausage kielbasa green beans recipe is made with canned green beans. To avoid mushiness, cook the dish until everything is heated through. There’s no need for extended cooking time.

What can I serve with sausage kielbasa green beans?

This recipe makes an excellent main dish when served with mashed potatoes, garlic bread, mac and cheese, or baked beans. For a holiday side, pair it with your favorites like turkey, ham, dressing, and all your favorite sides.

This is yummy. I make this often. Only thing I do different is I sub bacon grease for the butter. (I’m from the south & we always use bacon grease when cooking our green beans.)
