Homemade Soft Pretzels

Here is an easy recipe for delicious Homemade Soft Pretzels and one that can be enjoyed over and over when a craving for soft pretzels hit.

Homemade Soft Pretzels are soft and delicious, coated with sea salt and baked to a golden brown, then smothered with melted butter.

I LOVE soft pretzels and to be able to make them fresh, at home, is the best. We have been on a pretzel kick lately with these pretzels and pretzel bites (which I’ll post later). There is just something so delicious about a nice, warm, golden brown, salted pretzel dipped in your favorite dip or sauce.

What Dip Goes Good with Pretzels?

We love to dip our pretzels in whipped cream cheese, then second choice is nacho cheese sauce and then mustard. If you haven’t tried dipping your pretzels in cream cheese yet, you are going to love this way of eating soft pretzels. There is just something about the two flavors together that will have you coming back for seconds. It’s SO GOOD!

How Long Do Soft Pretzels Last?

Homemade soft pretzels will usually last 2-3 days at room temperature. I keep them in a container with a loosely fitting lid. Mainly because we keep getting into the container and they never last more than a day at my house. They can also be stored in a large resealable baggie after they have cooled completely.

Homemade Soft Pretzels are soft and chewy, dipped in nacho cheese sauce.

Can You Freeze Homemade Pretzels?

Yes, definitely! Once the pretzels have cooled completely, you can add pretzels to a freezer storage bag and place in the freezer for later. And, when you want a pretzel, pull out a baggie, remove pretzel, pop it on a baking sheet and bake for 5 minutes or so at 450° then brush with melted butter for added deliciousness.

Homemade Soft Pretzels are topped with salt, baked, brushed with melted butter and dipped in whipped cream cheese.

Ingredients Needed for Homemade Pretzels

  • All purpose flour
  • Rapid rise instant yeast
  • Sugar, salt
  • Baking soda
  • Vegetable oil
  • Butter
  • Pretzel salt or sea salt

(Actual measurements are below in the recipe box)

How To Make Homemade Soft Pretzels

  • Using a stand mixer with a dough hook attached, add the flour, sugar, salt and yeast. Stir, then add warm water.
  • With a spatula, stir to begin mixing then turn on mixer to medium speed and knead for 5 minutes.
  • Add oil to a paper towel and rub the inside of a medium bowl.
  • Dust dough with flour, place in the bowl and cover with plastic wrap. Let sit for 30 minutes until dough has doubled in size.
  • While the dough is rising, heat water and baking soda to boil. Turn heat off and let cool to warm.
  • On a lightly oil surface, after dough has doubled in size, turn dough out and cut into 8 pieces.
  • Roll between hands and make each piece of dough about 15 inches.
  • Take one piece of dough and form the shape of a pretzel.
  • Place each pretzel into baking soda bath for 30 seconds on each side.
  • Remove pretzels from water, reshape and place on a baking sheet that has been oiled or place on parchment paper that has been generously sprayed with non stick spray.
  • Once the pretzels have been placed in the baking soda water and place on baking sheet, sprinkle with pretzel salt or sea salt.
  • Pop in the oven and bake for 10-12 minutes or until pretzels are golden brown.
  • Remove from oven and brush with melted butter.

Why Do Pretzels Need To Be Dipped In Baking Soda Before Baking?

A baking soda bath is what gives the pretzels their crispy shiny coating, delicious texture and distinctive taste. This is a standard step when making homemade soft pretzels.
