Texas Style French Toast

If you love French toast, you are going to love this Texas style French toast recipe. Whether you are making breakfast or a simple dinner, you have to try this recipe. And, if your family loves French toast, this is a delicious French toast recipe that they will surely enjoy.

French Toast cut up with maple syrup being drizzled over them.

I have a huge collection of breakfast and brunch recipes on the site, ranging from sweet desserts for breakfast to classic savory options. I love them all, but one of my favorite recipes for a tasty start to the day is French toast.

I love the versatility of French toast. You can prepare it in the traditional way, or you can use it as part of other dishes like this delicious Monte Cristo sandwich, a combination of French toast and deli sandwich.

Another variation I love is this Texas style French toast. I love using Texas toast because it gives the best flavor to the meal. Texas toast is thicker and holds the custard mixture, making this an amazing breakfast or “breakfast for dinner” recipe.

I’ve included a list of all the ingredients you’ll need to make this French toast. You’ll find their specific amounts in the recipe card at the end of the post.

  • Eggs
  • Milk
  • Vanilla extract
  • Cinnamon
  • Butter

Variations

  • Texas Toast: Texas toast is nothing more than thick-cut white bread, so you can use any thickly sliced bread you like. Options like brioche and sourdough are excellent choices.
  • Super Rich: For even richer French toast, use half and half in place of milk for the custard mixture.
  • Sandwiches: Use these thick French toast slices to make sandwiches filled with your favorite breakfast meats, eggs, and cheese.

How to Make Texas Style French Toast

Check out the recipe overview here to give you an idea of how things will go. Then, use the recipe card at the end of the post for the full instructions.

  1. Whisk the custard ingredients in a large shallow bowl.
  2. Soak one slice of bread at a time in the mixture, coating one side, then flipping and coating the other.
  3. Add 4 slices of the soaked bread to a large skillet or grill set at medium heat and cook on both sides until golden brown and cooked through.
  4. Repeat until all the French toast is made and serve with your favorite sides and toppings.

Tips

  • Be careful not to soak the bread for too long. You want it to absorb the egg mixture without getting soggy.
  • Medium heat is the sweet spot for thick French toast like this. It allows the egg mixture in the bread to fully cook by the time the outside is golden brown.
  • Choose the thickest Texas toast or bread of your choice possible for the heartiest texture.

Texas Style French Toast FAQ

What is Texas-style French toast?

Texas French toast is a variation of French toast that uses Texas toast (thickly sliced white bread) in place of regular white bread. It gives the recipe a heartier texture, remaining moist on the inside while getting golden and toasted on the outside.

How long does French toast last?

French toast will remain fresh and delicious for up to 5 days when stored in the refrigerator in an airtight container.

Can you freeze homemade French toast?

Yes, you can! French toast is freezer-friendly and weill last of rup to 3 months in an airtight, freezer-safe container or heavy-duty freezer bag.

Why was my French toast soggy?

The most common cause of soggy French toast is soaking it for too long. French toast should be soaked long enough for the custard to permeate the bread but not so long that it becomes waterlogged, for lack of a better term.
