Looking for a quick and easy dinner that’s loaded with as much comfort as flavor? Then, you’ve come to the right place. My chicken tortellini soup is a rich, creamy soup loaded with classic comfort food flavor, and it’s ready in just about 30 minutes! It’s a hearty soup recipe perfect for even busy weeknights, and I should know. I routinely made this soup when my kids lived at home. When you have teenagers, you have to plan as much for teens descending upon your house in the afternoons as you do for dinner, and this soup fits that bill perfectly. I could make it for dinner and know that my kids and their friends would have something to eat the next afternoon. If you don’t have kids, this is still a great one because it reheats so well.

Chicken Tortellini Soup

This delicious soup starts with bite-sized boneless, skinless chicken breasts, carrots, onions, and celery. I cook the chicken until done, then I cook the veggies until tender. I add the soup ingredients, along with the chicken, corn, and tortellini, and cook until the pasta is tender. That’s all there is to it. It’s ready in about 30 minutes, and when I’m all done, I have a soup full of delicious flavors that everyone loves. It’s a great recipe for busy days or simply to feed a crowd.

Step 1: Cook the Chicken

Add 1 tablespoon of butter and oil to a Dutch oven over medium heat and cook the chicken for 4 to 6 minutes, stirring frequently, until done. Set the chicken aside and return the Dutch oven to the heat.

Recipe Tips

  • Cut the chicken into small pieces so they cook thoroughly by the time the soup is finished.
  • Keep the heat at medium with sautéing the vegetables so they get tender without browning.
  • Be sure to cook the veggie mixture for at least 2 minutes after adding the flour to cook off the raw flour flavor.
  • DO NOT bring the broth and heavy cream to a rolling boil, or the soup can curdle.

Variations

  • You can make this recipe with cubed pork, sliced smoked sausage, Italian sausage, ground beef, shredded chicken, or even rotisserie chicken.
  • Use your favorite tortellini for this recipe. Any filling works!
  • Add red pepper flakes for a kick of heat.
  • Add any of your other favorite vegetables to this soup for more flavor.
  • Use low sodium chicken broth, if desired.

What to Serve with Chicken Tortellini Soup

Serve this soup with simple sides like bread or a salad. I love it with crusty bread, garlic bread, breadsticks, or garlic knots, along with a garden salad.

Recipe FAQ

What is tortellini filled with?

Tortellini can be filled with either a cheese or meat mixture. The traditional cheese filling is ricotta cheese. The meat mixture is usually made with pork loin, raw prosciutto or mortadella, parmesan cheese, egg, and nutmeg. Either variation is authentically Italian.

How long is tortellini soup good in the fridge for?

Tortellini soup will last for about 3 days in the refrigerator in an air-tight container.

Can chicken tortellini soup be made in the crockpot?

Yes, it can! Add all the ingredients except the tortellini to a crock pot. The chicken should be added raw. Cook until the vegetables are tender, then add the tortellini and cook until tender.

Can you freeze chicken tortellini soup leftovers?

No, you can’t. Soups made with cream tend to separate and become grainy when defrosted and reheated.

How to Store and Reheat Leftover Chicken Tortellini Soup

Refrigerate this soup for up to 3 days in an airtight container. Freezing is not recommended, as the soup will almost certainly separate and become grainy when defrosted and reheated.

To reheat the soup, place it in a saucepan or pot, depending on how much you’re reheating, and cook on medium-low until heated through.
