Ingredients
I’ve listed all the ingredients you’ll need to make this delicious sandwich right here, but you’ll find their exact amounts in the recipe card at the end of the post.
- Texas toast
- Turkey
- Ham
- Swiss cheese
- Mayonnaise
- Dijon Mustard
- Large eggs
- Milk
- Butter
- Powdered sugar
- Raspberry jam or maple syrup (optional)
Variations
- Bread: I LOVE Texas toast for French toast. However, any thickly sliced bread will work. You could even use heartier varieties and let them soak in the egg mixture for just a bit longer. Have fun and experiment to find new flavors.
- Meat: Turkey and ham are the classic pairing, but you could use chicken, roast beef, or any of your other favorites in any flavor. The sweetness of the French toast bread works well with a wide variety of savory meats.
- Cheese: Almost any cheese will work well for these sandwiches. Try Provolone, Munster, mozzarella, or any of your other melty favorites.

How to Make a Monte Cristo Sandwich
I’ve included an overview of the recipe here, but you can find the exact instructions in the recipe card at the end of the post.
- Whisk the eggs and milk, and set them aside.
- Spread mayo on four slices of bread. Then, spread Dijon mustard on the other four slices.
- Add the turkey, cheese, and ham to create the sandwiches.
- Dip one sandwich at a time in the egg mixture as you would for French toast.
- Cook the sandwich in butter in a pan until golden on both sides, and repeat for the remaining sandwiches. Enjoy!
- Serve warm as-is or dust with powdered sugar and raspberry jam or maple syrup.
Tips
- I use Texas toast for its sturdiness. If you choose another bread, ensure it’s thick-cut so it can withstand the cooking process.
- Soak your sandwiches just long enough for the egg mixture to penetrate the bread a bit. You don’t want it to get soggy and fall apart.
- Add a bit of vanilla to the egg mixture for a true French toast flavor.
- I recommend reheating these as called for in the tips section of the recipe card. Microwaving won’t do these sandwiches justice!

Monte Cristo Sandwich FAQ
A Monte Cristo sandwich is a mashup of French toast and a traditional sandwich. Layers of ham, turkey, and Swiss cheese are sandwiched between two slices of thick bread, dipped in egg, and pan-fried like French toast.
Swiss is the traditional cheese used for these sandwiches. However, you can use any cheese you enjoy. The great thing about a sandwich like this is that anything goes. Try Swiss, Munster, Gruyère, American, white American, cheddar – the list goes on and on!
A Monte Cristo is usually served dusted with powdered sugar and a side of fruit jam for dipping.
If you soak your sandwich for too long, the bread will get soggy and fall apart while cooking. Soak both sides of your sandwich just long enough for the bread to absorb a little of the egg mixture.
